Pietermaritzburg – Paddlers preparing for the upcoming Dusi Canoe Marathon that starts at Camps Drift on 13 February are wrestling with the problems caused by the ever increasing sand mining operations on the two rivers that play host to the famous canoeing race.
Today was a long day for all competitors, and the longest of the Rio Negro Regatta, being 59.4km. Both the K2 and K1 starts were called back for a second rolling start.
South African canoeing received a major boost with the announcement by the International Canoe Federation that the World Canoe Marathon Championships will be hosted by the Natal Canoe Club (NCC) at Camps Drift in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa in 2017.

The ICF Classic Series Canoe Marathons are finished for 2013. The last race in Italy was completed on Sunday 20th October with more than 400 competitors. This series took place all over the world with ten races and paddlers having to complete at least two races to participate in the series.
The Durban duo of Hank McGregor and Grant van der Walt rewrote the record books at the Hansa Fish River Canoe Marathon as they wrapped up a fourth successive K2 title on a day of drama a that saw the leaderboard dramatically shaken up, while women’s overnight leaders Abby Adie and Anna Adamová enjoyed an unchallenged second stage to claim the ladies’ title.
The International Canoe Federation (ICF) has announced Oklahoma City as the host for the 2014 ICF Canoe Marathon World Championships. The announcement was made yesterday in Copenhagen at the conclusion of the 2013 world event. The audience for the announcement included the Crown Prince of Denmark.
Hungary proved their prowess over the long distance picking up an impressive haul of 15 medals at the 2013 ICF Canoe Marathon World Championships in Copenhagen, Denmark that was held from the 20-22nd September.
