Dawid Mocke has been racing open ocean downwind races for 15 years. He has traveled the globe as a professional paddler, has won over 30 international surfski titles and has been the World Surfski Series Champion an unprecedented 4 times.
The 2015 Mazars South African Surfski Championships were not without their drama however it was Dawid Mocké who managed to conquer the conditions and the rest of the field in the men’s singles.
My previous visits and experience of this majestic place in recent years have led me to develop a soft spot and a connection of sorts, for the venue of the ICF Surfski World Champs 2015. Check out my last blog on my path to Tahiti here.
Robert Stevenson, 57 and a British doctor, has lived in Hong Kong just over 20 years and started paddling surfski 5 years ago. Since, he has taken part in World Series races in Hong Kong, Mauritius and South Africa. The Dischem Automall Pete Marlin Surfski Race was rocked by the disappearance of one of the paddlers during the race on Saturday but with the help of the local community a huge search party was deployed in an attempt to locate Mark Feather who remains lost however the search for him will continue.
It was a dominant display from the surfski heavy weights in the Western Cape as the Mocké family won both the men’s and the women’s singles at the recent Mauritius Ocean Classic that took place in the island paradise last weekend with Jasper and Nikki proving too strong for their respective fields as they claimed the top podium step.
Few paddlers hold a record comparable to that of Oscar Chalupsky, who began his multiple water sports career during his school years.
