Birkett holds lean Berg day two lead

An icy cold, rainy and windy start greeted the paddlers as they set off from Zonquasdrift on the second day of the 2014 Berg River Canoe Marathon on Thursday and in the end, it was KwaZulu-Natal visitor Andy Birkett who crossed the line first and claimed the leader’s yellow bib while Abby Adie produced another stellar performance to retain her women’s race lead ahead of stage three’s 75km slog.

Reigning King stumped on Berg day one

A bright but chilly start turned into a nightmare for defending Berg River Canoe Marathon champion Lance King who laboured to fourteenth place overall following an early swim after the only short portage of the day, a day which belonged to Graeme Solomon and Abby Adie who claimed the men's and women's race leader's yellow bib respectively ahead of the grueling 48km second stage on Thursday.

World class Czech professional paddlers Jakub Adam and Anna Adamova arrived in South Africa six months ago, ready to tackle the Fish River Canoe Marathon.
