A drama laden and action packed K1 Senior Men’s race set the 2015 ICF Canoe Marathon World Championships alight in Győr, Hungary on Saturday as South African sensation Hank McGregor came back from a near-minute deficit to win his sixth global title.
With the 2015 Hansa Fish River Canoe Marathon just over a month away, paddlers’ preparation is well underway and it is no different for Gauteng based para-canoeist Constant Olivier who will be tackling the iconic two-day journey from Grassridge Dam to the Sports Fields in Cradock from 9-10 October for the first time.
Saturday’s fourth and final stage of the taxing 2015 Berg River Canoe Marathon was a historic day for South African paddling icon Hank McGregor who became the first person in history to win the 240km clash from Paarl to Velddrif for a tenth time while Western Cape local Bianca Beavitt notched up her first women’s crown.
Hank McGregor got his challenge for a record tenth Berg River Canoe Marathon title off to the perfect start on Wednesday when he raced to a sizeable victory in the four day race’s altered first stage from Hermon to Bridgetown while Cape Town’s Bianca Beavitt dominated the women’s opening clash.
After a recent singles (K1) victory in the South African Canoe Marathon Championships in Pietermaritzburg, and second place in the doubles (K2), Natal Canoe Club star Andy Birkett will be heading overseas with his K2 partner Greg Louw to tackle two big events in preparation for the ICF Canoe Marathon World Championships in Hungary in September, where South Africa will be defending the men's team title they won at the World Champs in Oklahoma City in 2014.
World Champions Hank McGregor and Jasper Mocké successfully defended their men's K2 title at the South African flatwater marathon canoeing championships at Camps Drift to conclude a thrilling weekend of racing with honours more or less even between McGregor and Andy Birkett.
The British marathon athletes have dominated this 43rd edition of the Amsterdam Waterland Marathon, part of the ICF classic marathon series. In both senior classes, the highest rankings were taken home to the British island. Only in the Junior and Masters men categories other paddlers were able to take home the biggest honours.
With just a week to go another mass start in the 43rd edition Amsterdam Waterland Marathon will commence. The international reputation of this classic race is growing, 122 athletes from more than 10 countries will be taking part in the marathon part of the ICF Classic Series.
Seldom does a top athlete take a multi-year break from a sport and return to it with the same success. Sometimes, though, there are exceptions, and in very rare cases those athletes come back even better than before. Such was the case with 2015 Dusi Canoe Marathon women's champion Laura O'Donoghue.
This weekend Waterside D will see another two records fall, both to the same crew, Keith Moule (Chelmsford) and Lizzi Broughton (Richmond) will break the mixed K2 record for both the 35 mile course and the combined overall time for a mixed double over the series by a considerable margin.
