Czech Rafting Cup is under way

Jan Homolka | Sportscene - Due to weak winter and poor snow conditions, which have caused very low water levels in the Czech Republic, the Czech Rafting Cup will happen at different locations than in the past. Races are being relocated and it seems to be that this year's wild water rafting competition will only be a pipe-dream.

The first race of the Czech Rafting Cup series took place on the 29th March on the Sázava River near Pikovice. Sázava is usually passable on the upper parts of the river, but not this year. Races at Sázava acted as qualifiers for the forthcoming WRC which will be held in Indonesia next year.

'Easier' water only suits few a teams and everybody was witness to a strange turn of events. The former best raft team TR Rafting Morava (now known as TR RM) were in third, leaving the second place to the team from Prague Bestie Stream Troja with first going to the Hanace Rafters A from the České Budějovice. Teams in other categories fulfilled their roles as favourites and won. In women's category winners were: Seniors - TR Teva Tygříci, Juniors - TR Meatfly Hanace and Veterans - TR Veterán.

After surprise in the men’s category was everybody looking forward to the next race - relocated from the Kamenice River to the River Vltava in Vyssi Brod. Water terrain here is slighter harder than at Sázava, but also fairly easy and physically testing. Rivers are almost empty and you must paddle hard for every inch you want to gain.

The Classic race occurred over 4 kilometres with two weirs along the way. This race was also qualification into next years WRC; as a result of high-point ranking in the Czech qualification system everybody was determined to win and earn valuable points. The women's event was closely-fought; veteran and junior category were similar to those at Sázava. TR Teva Tygříci, TR Veterán and TR Meatfly Hanace won with a substantial time-lead and can be quite relaxed now.

The toughest fight was in the men's category, where competition between TR RM, Hanace Rafters A and Bestie Stream Troja escalated. Hanace wanted to win again and thus lead the scoreboard. Unfortunately it wasn’t their lucky day as they lost first place to TR RM with a 9-hundred-of-a-second (0,09) gap. Bestie Stream Troja finished in third place.

Results are unpredictable and teams have to prepare for future slalom and sprint races which will take place from the 7-8th of June in Prague and the 17-18th August in České Budějovice.
