2011 Canoe Slalom World Cup Final Day Two

Three categories would be decided today, C1 men and women and the K1 men’s events. Not only were medals up for grabs for the Prague World Cup but the overall 2011 World Cup series title would be decided including prize money for the first three finishers in each class.

C1 Men Finally, Alexander Slafkovsky (SVK) would come out top for the day in the canoe men final. He clocked 94.85 and would be leaving the Troja course with the gold medal. Only 8 hundreths seconds slower was French kayaker Denis Chanut Gargaut who put in a great run in the final and confirmed his good form that he had shown all weekend. David Florence (GBR) held onto third position with a time 96.50 with his hard fought final run.

Despite the perfect results from the heats and semi-final local hero and favourite Czech kayaker Stanislav Jezek lost concentration and obtained a penalty and ended up down in fourth place. However, this was enough to guarantee him victory in the overall World Cup Series Rankings. Jezek was tied on points with Matej Benus (SVK) for the title after the 4 races, but Jezek’s better finishing position in the Final saw him take the title and prize money home.

C1 Woman No Jessica Fox (AUS) in Prague, which meant the door was open for other ladies to shine this weekend. It was another Australian Rosalyn Lawrence who proved to be the best in the women canoe single final with a time 118.10 with the only clean run of the Final. Lawrence also gained the over-all victory in the World Cup Series as her strongest rival Leanne Guinea (AUS) ended up in sixth place in the Final event.

Katerina Hoskova (CZE), the leader in the heats and semi-finals crossed the finish line with the second fastest time of 121.20. Caroline Loir (FRA) won the bronze medal in the final World Cup event of the year.

K1 Men Daniele Molmenti (ITA), current world champion, won the Men’s Kayak semifinal With a time 88.32 . The fastest man from the heats, Vavrinec Hradilek (CZE), was second on today’s course with a time 90.18 thanks to a safe clear run. The third fastest time clocked was from the promising young German kayaker Hannes Aigner. Molmenti told the ICF ‘I am happy, it was a good run’. He certainly seemed up for the competition this weekend.

The Final turned out to be a continuation of the struggle between Vavrinec Hradilek (CZE), Peter Kauzer (SLO) and the current world champion Daniele Molmenti (ITA). However, the Italian kayaker, who started last in the Final thanks to his victory in the semifinal, wasn't able to overcome Hradilek's time (88.60) in a dramatic finale. Nonetheless, the difference was a mere 5 hundredth’s of a second. Thus, Vavrinec Hradilek took the gold medal and Molmenti the silver.

The bronze medal will belong to on form kayaker Peter Kauzer (SLO), whose time 90.02 was good enough not only for the third place but ensured victory in the overall World Cup Series. Kauzer told the ICF after the race:

I am happy, I really needed that in preparations for the World Championships

The Czech kayaker Lubos Hilgert ended up in fourth place with a time 90.19 rounding off a great day of competition.
