Interview with Paracanoeist Patrick Mahoney and Coach John Griffiths
Nick Harding | @nickhdg | Sportscene - An idyllic, picture-postcard, wintry Thames backdrop, angry swans a plenty. Taking time out from his training, Sportscene was lucky enough to catch up with 2011 ICF Paracanoeist of the Year and World Champion two years ago, Patrick Mahoney, as well as having a quick chin-wag with his coach John Griffiths.
We get down to the nitty-gritty of paracanoe, have a look at its exciting future in the wake of Rio 2016 and get to the bottom of the bantering, tongue-in-cheek Pat-Griff relationship.
His passion began off Hamilton Island, Australia, Patrick is a sprint canoeist for GB Canoeing racing outriggers (Va'a). At the 2011 Canoe Sprint World Championships in Szeged, Hungary he won gold in the V1 200m Legs Trunk and Arms category (LTA – functional use of all three) and a bronze at the ICF Paracanoe World Championships in Poznan 2012 just behind fellow Patrick, Tahitian Viriamu. Many are often unaware that Pat's athletic career also spans to GB Paralympic Rowing where he competed for a selection seat for Beijing 2008.
He hopes to medal at the Rio 2016 Paralympics in the same category as well as snatch back his World Championship crown from Browitzky Gerhard:
I want to steal back my title as World Champion from the Germans in their own backyard.
The 2013 Canoe Sprint World Championships will be held in Duisburg, Germany.
Legend 'Griff', once Marathon paddler, has had a decorated coaching career in elite-level dragon-boating, kayaking and outrigging. After ten years coaching the GB Women's dragon boat squad, winning numerous World and European medals leading to a Mussabini award and firm place on the wall in the Sport Coach UK Coaching Hall of Fame, John accepted an invitation to lead the national Iranian dragon boat team. He became appointed as British Paracanoe Coach in 2011, Patrick is one of his many disciples.
I really hope we will continue to see more and more athletes coming into paracanoe and competing.
Keep an eye out for the infamous swans in the background and check out the video above to see Pat and Griff's interviews in crisp South West London.
