Taylor Potts

Training and studying in Canada’s capital, Taylor (pictured right) is a full-time Communications student and sprint canoe enthusiast. As an athlete of a non-Olympic discipline herself, Taylor is an advocate for gender equity in sports. She is a part of the international community of women’s canoe: a passionate group of females hoping to see themselves compete in Rio 2016. Taylor is grateful to Sportscene for giving women’s canoe the opportunity to share their experiences and further encourage their campaign.
It took Taylor fifteen years and several sports to discover the world of flatwater racing. She rode horses for eight years before entering high school to try other athletics. She occasionally gets an itch to be back in the saddle after watching epic movies.
After knocking herself out and effectively ending her freshman rugby career, Taylor decided to give water sports a try. Sprint canoe presented the perfect balance of challenge and reward to keep her hooked.
In 2009, her first C1 race earned her a spot on Team Ontario to participate in that year’s Canada Games. Since then, she has competed at the Pan American Championships in Mexico to win three gold medals in C1 as a junior, and had the opportunity train and race with the top females in Canada. Taylor hopes to be able to inspire young females to stick with sprint canoe, as her partner Mallorie Nicholson (pictured left) did for her.
