London 2012 Olympian Jo was born in Mona Vale Hospital on 19th April 1988, and has lived on Sydney's Northern Beaches her whole life. She participated in many different sports during her time at school but never trained more than once a week for them. She participated in swimming, athletics, netball, basketball, soccer, touch football and surf lifesaving. In 2001, at 13, she was selected in a talent identification squad run through the Sydney Northern Beaches Kayak Club. Under the guidance of her SNBKC coach Christine Duff, Jo progressed through the ranks to become one of the country’s top juniors. She then received a New South Wales Institute of Sport scholarship and commenced training with NSWIS coach Guy Wilding.

Jo graduated with a Bachelor of Nursing from the University of Technology, Sydney where she also won the UTS Union Sportswoman of the Year award in 2008 and 2009. In 2012 Jo started studying via distance education through Charles Sturt University a Diploma of Clinical Practice (Paramedic). She is steadily working towards her dream job of becoming a paramedic.
