Doris Corbin
Doris Corbin lives in Lake Echo, Canada and is married to Dwight Corbin. They have 3 wonderful children and 7 grandchildren, all of whom live in Nova Scotia, Canada.
Doris is a Retired Teacher and an International Canoe Official in Marathon and Sprint. Her retirement hobby is Photography. Doris had the opportunity to attend some very exciting International canoe events and use her camera to showcase our athletes and our sport. You can see some of her photography by going to www.copaconline.com and viewing the Sprint events.
Doris' interest in Canoeing began 30 years ago when her children began competitive racing in kayaks at Lake Banook in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. Their newly-formed Canoe Club was called Orenda which means powerful spirit in Micmac. Doris wanted to make a difference so she volunteered as an Official. All officials are volunteers in sprint in Canada. Although most of the officials were men, Doris persisted and soon became a National Official and then an International Official.
Doris and her family love sport. She and her husband are both International Officials. Dwight then moved into the Administrative part of Sports. He was the Commodore of the Canadian Canoe Association and is presently on the ICF Board as the Representative for North America and Vice- President for the Pan American Canoe Federation. Their oldest daughter, Andrea Waters, is an ICF Classifier for Para-Canoe.
Although Doris paddled recreationally, she preferred to put her energies into Officiating at all levels of paddling during the last 30 years.
Doris was appointed to several International events, including The Pan Am Games in The Dominican Republic, Canada, Mexico and Brazil. She was appointed as Sports Information Officer for Canoeing and Rowing events at The Asian Games (2006) in Doha, Qatar and helped to train officials at the Caribbean Games in Puerto Rico in 2010. She worked with the Observer program at the 2009 World Canoe Championships in Dartmouth, NS, where she met many wonderful people who were involved in organizing upcoming International events.
As to why she stays involved in the sport Doris says: "I guess it is because of the great friends we have made from all over the world and the support I receive from family and friends. I enjoy sharing photos of the athletes who are working to make their dreams come true. It is my way of giving back to a sport which was so good to my family."
