Who will become the World’s King & Queen of Sprint?

A huge event will be held in Augsburg soon: on the Pentecost weekend the 1st Wildwater Canoe Sprint WC is going to take place from June 11 to 13, 2011. The long standing Eiskanal is not only tempting with high performance to be expected, but also a great program will be performanced by the Canoe Schwaben Augsburg co-ordinators. Horst Woppowa and Karl Heinz Englet, the principal organizers, promise the three-day event to be a „valuable trip for the whole family and not only for fans of the canoe sports“. Accordingly entrance fee is moderate.

Once again sport history will be written in Augsburg: for the first time sprint kings and queens will be detected among the world's best sprinter on an artificial racing track. They have to face more than 600 meters of a tricky Eiskanal, the worldwide first artificial made wildwater parcours in the heart of  Augsburg. On this very artificial piste competitors from all over the world have to experience strong curves and spotted rocks- before titles  were achieved just on rivers. „Water is pulsing that's why one needs a certain bit of luck“, Normen Weber explains, European champion (Canoe Schwaben Augsburg).

Home Favourites

Weber is part of the WC favourites of the German national team of 18 competitors, who shortly showed up with successful 3 x gold, 5 x silver and 7 x bronze, achieved in the European Championship in Kraljevo, Serbia. Joyful from the organizer's point of view is: among the inner circle of favourites are -due to enjoying a home advantage- the European Champions Sabine Füßer (Canoe Schwaben Augsburg) and Manuela Stöberl (Donauwörth  KK Rosenheim). Despite it won't be that easy for the national WC  DKV team facing a  strong European competition. The starters coming from across the Atlantic, i.e. from USA, are difficult to be estimated, since they hardly have been found  in European races. The co-ordinators are calculating with 250 athletes out of 25 nations. WC titles will be given in the disciplines Kajak Einer (women and men), Canadian Einer (women, men) as well as Canadian Zweier (men) – each in single and team score cards.

A Three-days Canoe Festival

The co-ordination heads Horst Woppowa and Karl Heinz Englet promise a „ canoe festival for everybody, athletes and spectators“. The charming attraction of the Augsburg competition track, the Canoe Arena Eiskanal, giving place up to 10.000 spectators,  is reasoning in the chance of following the races directly along the track. Additionally there is also the opportunity of watching the parts of the tracks situated further away. Spectators will have the possibility of a contact or a small talk aside the Channel with the athletes from all over the world whenever they want to – you won't find shielded athletes in Augsburg.

Every  visitor  will spot some attraction within the three-days spectacle, whether kids, teenagers, families or adults. Whether canoe driver camp or  canoe museum just feel free to visit all. Many huts around the Kanal offer information, participating activities or food and  beverage.  Jumping castle, climb wall or slackline keeps you in motion and with other varieties offered in the water – of the calm – youth track, too.

Opening with a Stunning Show

It won't be boaring even in the recreation time between the races. Top canoist like canoe slalom world champion Fabian Dörfler will present spectacular disciplines and interim races. By the way this will be boat cross (four boats at the same time paddling against each other), stand up paddling (standing paddling on a surfboard) and canoe rodeo. It will already start on Friday, June 10, 2011: opening celebration show will take place at the Canoe Arena Eiskanal on  4.30 p.m. with an entrance-free breathtaking show.

Nevertheless whoever intends to follow this lively event chilling in the sun, will find meadowy  nice places open-air. Indeed the Eiskanal is known as Augsburg's green loungs and suburban recreation area.
