Nick Harding | @nickhdg | Sportscene -Two weeks ago it was the Junior and U23 Worlds, this weekend was about about the Junior and U23 European Championships.

C2M U23

The Czech must have been eating magic beans, as they did at the U23 Worlds, no other nationality could get a look in!

Silver medallists at the Junior and U23 Worlds a fortnight ago, Kaspar/Sindler (CZE) took gold this time round and well-deserved too – they were fastest in both Heats with 103.14, quickest in the Semis with 105.45 and even went on to better their time again in the Final with 103.00 dead.

The Polish Brzezinskis who tried so desperately to steal the gold from the Czechs at the U23 Worlds in Slovakia and ended up with Bronze, also took bronze here in the French Alpes. A real rivalry is heating up between these two crews.

K1W U23

Some real surprises at this year's Europeans. Eyes were on Czech Katerina Kudejova who defended her World U23 crown. However, she failed to even make the Final with a 17th place finish in the Semis, disappointingly nor did 2nd place at the Senior Europeans Mallory Franklin (GBR).

So the new favourite was Italian Stefanie Horn who took Silver in Slovakia even then she could only manage 16th in the Semis not qualifying further. It wasn't Vikki Wolffhardt weekend either achieved 6th in the Final.

So who snuck under the radar? It was Ricarda Funk (GER) who was the most outstanding this weekend; first in Heat 1, top in the Semis with 105.00 flat and Gold in the Final with 106.38. Story of the day though, it was a home 2-3 for Sportscene's Nouria Newman and Estelle Mangin (FRA), a vast improvement on their 7th and 8th in Slovakia. The French crowd went wild.

K1M U23

The most consistent over the week has been Joe Clarke (GBR) who was also the quickest overall. A tasty 2nd in Heat 1, 1st in the Semi-Finals with a sensational 91.58 run and he rounded it all off with a Silver in the final run.

Winner of the U23 World Championship Frenchman Mathieu Biazizzo failed to make the Final as he finished in a tiresome 25th in the Semis.

Martin Halcin (SVK) won gold on Friday with a 94.79 descent, the other two medals were closely-fought as there was only a second between Clarke 95.15 and Italy's Giovanni De Gennaro, 95.60.

C1M U23

Top performances all week from Thomas Quinn (GBR) who was fastest after two Heats, then 3rd in the Semis was repeated with an admirable 3rd in the Finals.

It was a Croatia-Slovenia 1-2 with Marinic taking the gold with a 100.00 exact navigation of the staggered course and Bercic a close-behind 100.57 for Silver.

Italy's Roberto Colazingari, 2012 U23 World Champion, had a good second Heat with a third-place finish and just missed out on the medals in 4th in the Final with 101.33, over a second slower than Croatia's gold.

It was a 5-6 finish for home paddlers Foulon and Perron (FRA).

C1W U23

No Jess Fox because of nationality, was it the opportunity for 3rd place at the U23 Worlds Mallory Franklin (GBR) to take the gold she had so wanted? Yes, she did it in 110.92 nearly 7 seconds faster than 3rd place Monkia Jancova (CZE)!

Silver went proudly to Spain's Vilarrubla who had actually won the Semis.

2nd place at the U23 Worlds in Slovakia, Vikki Wolffhardt sadly didn't make the Final where she ended up in 13th in the Semis, although she did prove herself once again in C1W, her newer class, with the number-three slot in Heat 1.

Credit of the week goes to Jasmine Royle (GBR) who had impressive runs in the Heats; 2nd in the first and 1st in the second!
