Peter Kauzer and Eva Terčelj, paddlers of the year

Slovenia - The season 2011 was again very successful for Slovenian kayakers and canoeists. At the most important races of the season – World and European Championships and World Cup Races – twenty competitors won medals. Slovenia has two World Champions, Peter Kauzer in slalom and Nejc Žnidarčič in wildwater sprint, and several young paddlers also won five gold medals at European Junior and U23 Championships in Banja Luka. In 2011 Peter Kauzer and Eva Terčelj became Paddlers of the year.

The Paddler of the year awards ceremony, which was held in Celje, did not bring any big surprises. The best male paddler of the year became Peter Kauzer who won the World Champion title for the second time. Besides that he won a gold medal in team race (together with Jure Meglič and Simon Brus) at the European Championships, won at two World Cup races in Tacen and L’Argentière, and was third in Prague, which brought him also a second win in World Cup Overall Standings. “I could say this award was expected, although also Nejc Žnidarčič became World Champion in Wildwater Sprint which is not an Olympic discipline. But I think I justified this award with a World Champion title and an Overall World Cup win. I am happy I have won this title again,” said Peter Kauzer, who succeeded Jure Meglič at the position of the best paddler of the year.

The best female paddler of the year became Eva Terčelj. She won at the U23 European Championships in Banja Luka, in her first year among the seniors. She finished fourth at the World Cup race in Tacen and also made it to the finals of the second World Cup race in France and World Championships in Bratislava. In Slovakia she finished ninth and ensured an Olympic quota for the Slovenian team.

The Canoe Federation of Slovenia awarded Simon Brus with the title of best junior paddler of the year, the best canoe sprint racers are Lovro Leban and Rok Kuk in the male category, while Špela Ponomarenko Janić is the best Slovenian female sprint paddler. Special awards were also given to those who won medals at the most important competitions in 2011. Peter Kauzer, Jure Meglič, Simon Brus, Nejc Žnidarčič, Blaž Cof, Tim Kolar, Anže Berčič, Eva Terčelj, Luka Božič and Sašo Taljat, Lovro Leban and Rok Kuk, Martin Srabotnik, Matic Štrukelj, Ajda Novak, Anja Kancler, Vid Debeljak, Luka Žganjar and Simon Oven received awards for medals at European and World championships and the Overall World Cup Standings.

Kayak canoe club Krka received an award for its work and development in canoeing. They have been organizing a recreational event at Krka River for the past 35 years.
