Interview with German slalom athlete Jasmin Schornberg

27 Year-old Jasmin Schornberg from Germany, 2009 World Champion canoe slalom and 2012 Olympian, chats to Sportscene’s German correspondent Sabrina Barm.
You are studying - it's quite hard to train and work at the same time, isn't it? What are your studies about?
I´m studying media and communications. I have a lot to do all day, but I feel good about it.
What do you love about your sport?
I love travelling around and that every course is different. I like playing with the water, nature and being outside.
Is there anything you hate about it?
Sometimes it can be very cold in winter!
How do you motivate yourself when you don't feel like training? Or are you always motivated?
Sometimes I watch some videos featuring nice paddling performances from the last season.
What does an average day in your life look like?
After I paddle early in the morning, I go to university. After lunch I have my other sessions and around 6-8pm i come home. Sometimes in the evening I visit some friends. When I have no lessons at the university I use the free time to relax at home.
How would a perfect day look?
I like most days of my life. The best days are the ones when I just have training, have fun and have some time for friends or family!
You started canoeing because of your mother. Now you are older and a successful athlete - what role does she play in your sporting career?
She comes to most of the important races and I love it! She already plays a very important role because she´s always with me, in good and bad situations!
Does she (and your father) enjoy seeing you racing and do you share the highs and lows together?
Yes, we all have a good relationship with each other. They enjoy watching me race and console me when I feel sad!

In London you went from 8th place (heats) to 7th (semis) to 5th (final). That's excellent progression. Do you think you got the best out of yourself?
I made some mistakes during the final run but for my first Olympic Games, I am satisfied.
Now the Olympic Games are behind you how do you look back?
It was a nice and unforgettable event., but next time I´ll be better, so I can fly back with a medal in my baggage ;-)
What has kept you motivated after the Olympics?
My aim for the next Olympic Games!
You have done quite a few TV commercials and photo shoots. What do you like about doing these? Do you enjoy working in front of the camera as a model?
It´s nice to have good photos or video clips of yourself but it´s not as easy as it looks. If you have a good team you can have a lot of fun and learn a lot of new things!
However, I like to do sports more than modelling in front of the camera!
Can you tell us something about yourself that not many people know?
I am not always as superior as it looks like.
Do you already have an idea of what you would like to do after your athletic career?
Become a journalist.
What are you looking forward to the most in the season 2014?
I´ll compete at the Worlds and Europeans and hopefully I can stay in the final.
Is there anything else you want to tell people?
Enjoy every day of your life!!!
