Day 2 Junior & U23 World Championships – King Cédric, the next Estanguet?
Nick Harding | @nickhdg | Sportscene - Summary of Day 2 results: Cédric Joly's (FRA) day – number 1 in both Junior C1M Heats, U23 Czech Kudejova seals K1W double-heat firsts, Colazinari (ITA) takes surprise overall first in U23 C1M
Liptovsky today, cloudless; priceless for experience.
No one could touch Frenchman Cédric Joly today, two solid firsts in the C1M Junior Heats – are we looking at a new Tony Estanguet? Only time will tell.
Here is a summary of the day's proceedings:
K1W U23
Jess Fox, K1W London 2012 silver medallist had a flaky first run just after 9am this morning finishing an unexpected 45th following a 50 on gate one. She showed true character in Heat 2 and reeled it in to second place with an impressive 111.29-time.
Another Heat win for the Czech Republic today, adding to that of Karlovsky and Jane in the C2s yesterday, this time it was Kudejova's turn, a solid run totalling 108.06. Mallory Franklin (GBR) should be content with her second place and well-done Austria's Vikki Wolfhardt for gaining third. France's Estelle Mangin was a close fourth with only a second more.
Kudejova went one better than first place in Heat 2, she sliced a further second off her time! Mallory slipped to 3rd, Vikki to 6th, Estelle to 9th who was also overtaken by team-mate Nouria Newman who earned a valiant 7th. It wasn't Beth Latham's (GBR) day where she finished in 11th in both Heats but she won't be too concerned as she still qualified comfortably for tomorrow's semis. Vilarrubla (ESP) who had such a good day yesterday in C1W only just made the cut for the K1W semi-final as the slowest qualifier after two Heats.
C1M U23
Heat 1 saw Eastern European supremacy in the top three; Bozic (SLO), Marinic (CRO) and Gajarsky (SVK) but also in the top 20 – 3 Slovenians, 2 Czechs, 1 Croatian, 1 Slovakian, 3 Poles and 2 Russians!
Positions remained fairly constant in Heat 2 with the exception of a blinding run from Italian Colazingari rounding up his 4th place in Heat 1, overall there really wasn't a lot in it between the top placed U23s illustrating a high-level of performance in a tight-finishing young field. What an excellent second run Westley (GBR) had moving from 19th in the first up to fifth – that's a 14-place leap! Great to see as Britain's young C1M men have recently been less predominant than their female team-mates in the same discipline; Quinn also made into the next round.
Going into tomorrow's semis, so the top five in descending order are Westley (GBR), Marinic (CRO), Bozic (SLO), Setkin (RUS) and Colazingari (ITA).
Juniors
The top five going into the C1M Junior semis, tomorrow's last event of the day, in reverse order are: Mruzek (CZE), Smolarski (POL), Rohan (CZE), Gurecka (SVK) and Joly himself. Sole Australian to make it through to tomorrow was Daniel Watkins, 29th.
In Junior K1W, Team Australia were elated as Noemie Fox and Georgia Eckhardt went through to tomorrow, the top places went to, in reverse, Gold at Cardiff World Cup Kim Woods (GBR), Leitner (AUT), Sátila (BRA), Zwolinska (POL) and Galuskova (CZE).
Brazil's Ana Sátila had a sensational 117.78 run in Heat 1 and opted not to paddle in the second. It's so exciting watching her career unfold, she will be the star attraction at Rio 2016 for the Brazilian home support and will have to learn to deal with the stardom that will come with it.
…
Forecast for tomorrow is some tense semi-final action across all classes, it will be cooler than today with highs of 23 degrees which may be in the paddlers' favour. However, the 82% will still make for sticky work.
