Bottled water creates its own share of pollution - the production of plastic bottles requires millions of barrels of oil per year and the transportation of bottled water from its source to stores releases thousands of tons of carbon dioxide.

1. If you were to fill one quarter of a plastic water bottle with oil, you would be looking at roughly the amount used to produce that bottle.
2. The quantity of water Americans* drink equals the fuel needed to keep 1 million vehicles on the road for 12 months. * In the USA there is a lot of research done into the pollution water bottles.
3. Only about 13 percent of the used bottles end up in the recycling stream where they are turned into products like fleece clothing, carpeting, decking, playground equipment and new containers and bottles.
4. Plastic water bottles are one of the main sources of pollution found in common natural areas such as beaches. It is not uncommon to find countless plastic water bottles washed ashore, which poses a serious problem to the natural environments of these areas.
5. It is estimated that one tenth of all plastic that is created every year eventually ends up in one of our oceans. Plastic water bottles play a major roll in this staggering statistic, and many water bottles eventually end up on the ocean floor.
6. Plastic takes much longer to decompose than many other types of garbage that is typically thrown away. When plastic water bottles are thrown away, they can literally last for years and years before they finally break down.
7. Plastic bags and other plastic garbage thrown into the ocean kill as many as 1,000,000 sea creatures every year!
