ICF Ocean Racing World Championships: Australia and South Africa announce teams

We are only less than two months away from the first ever Ocean Racing World Championships, which will take place in Portugal. More than 100 athletes are expected to arrive in Portugal, representing a total of more than 30 nations. The event will take place in Vila do Conde, Portugal, between 12 and 14 of July.

The World Championships event will consist of two separated events:
1. Downwind Single Ski - 22,5 km
2. Downwind Double Ski - 22,5 Km (Demo Race)

The course is 22,5 km of downwind, with no upwind section, start and finish in the surf. The start is “Le Mans” style using paddle lockers, the ones used in the famous “Sella” start.

Classes
Men SS-1, SS-2 Women SS-1, SS-2 Under 23 Men SS-1 Under 23 Women SS-1 Junior Men SS-1 Junior Women SS-1

Also an open event will be taking place simultaneouly, with a separate start (one massive start, including all age groups). World Champiosnhips entries will automatically be register for the open event.

For Single and double Ski Classes, National Federations will be able to nominate the following number of athletes to the pole position start(ranked):

  • 5 boats per class for Australia
  • 5 boats per class for South Africa
  • 2 boats per class to the other countries

A third class (Masters) will be competing in this race, starting at 35 and having a subclass for each 5 year period. Example: 35-39 years old.
