Olympic Park Rio 2016

Detailed planning will be carried out over the next months by the winning company in conjunction with the parties involved in the park construction. Last Friday, the winning project of the International Competition for the Rio 2016 Olympic Park Urban Masterplan was unveiled, coordinated by the Municipal Olympic Company, in partnership with the Brazil’s Architects Institute (IAB).

Developed by global service providers AECOM, the project outlines how the Olympic Park area will be used, the public spaces, squares and parks as well as the location of the permanent and temporary venues and the future real estate developments to be built at the site. For this moment, the plan is conceptual. Detailed planning will be carried out over the next months by the winning company in conjunction with the parties involved in the park construction.

According to IAB, the winning project distinguished itself to the judging commission "because of the operational concept, the separate access to athletes and the spectators, the logistics of the transportation system, the execution feasibility and an exclusive way to parking. In terms of legacy that the project will leave to the city, the highlights referred to environmental preservation, the maintenance feasibility and the preservation of the lagoon."

The competition brought together 60 entries from firms in 18 countries. With seven members, the jury consisted of representatives from the Rio City Hall, the International Union of Architects, the Brazil’s Architects Institute, the Rio 2016 Organising Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games and the Federal Government.
