Coach Mike Druce escapes from Colditz and walks 600 kilometer to Switzerland

Slalom coach Mike Druce is escaping from Colditz and walking 600km unsupported to Switzerland to raise money for the Fred Hollows Foundation. Date of escape 26th September 2014...
Saturday 4 Oktober - "I am at roughly the half way point on the walk. I deliberately set no target today for distance as my feet and legs needed an easier day. I was running out of suppllies as yesterday was a public holiday in Bavaria. I think Bavaria holds the world record for the number of public holidays, it is a wonder they get any BMW's built at all.
I changed my route and headed for Heroldsberg. This lead me to a fabulous hotel breakfast buffet. The owner was so interested and impressed by my walk that he have me a free breakfast and insisted I take extra with me in a bag. For which I was very grateful. I shall donate the 10€ on his behalf.
The most direct line was now through Nürnberg city centre so I took a brief walking tour of a beautiful city."

Why is Mike escaping from Colditz and Walking 600Km to Switzerland?
"I'll be crossing into Switzerland using the Singen route, used successfully by many WWII escapers including Pat Reid and Airey Neave.
I have set the target of saving the sight of one person for every km I will walk. This means raising $15,000.
My goal is to honour the men and women of my fathers generation, who navigated great hardship and challenging times with a level of courage and ingenuity at which I can only marvel.
I want to test myself to see if I can meet a challenge which is a fraction of what the escapers faced but, at least can put me in the shoes of some of those great men.
Finally I want to help to continue the great work of Fred Hollows to fight preventable blindness."
