Scott Logan to lead CanoeKayak Canada’s High Performance Program
Ian Miller | CanoeKayak Canada - CanoeKayak Canada is pleased to announce the hiring of Scott Logan as its new High Performance Director. Logan comes to this position with an impressive resume of leadership experience in sport, government and the corporate sector.
Logan was a National Team Coach from 1985 to 1991 and was the Team Leader for the CanoeKayak squad at the Seoul 1988 Olympic Games. Logan holds a Masters in Kinesiology and a Bachelor of Physical Education from Dalhousie University. Logan competed internationally as a kayak athlete and as a coach he pioneered new training and coach education programs. These programs became fundamental in advancing the sport and building a legacy of success in Atlantic Canada and at the national level.
“From coaching elite athletes on the water to managing at the executive level, Scott has a proven track record of success and we’re proud to have him on board,” said Lorraine Lafrenière, Director General of CanoeKayak Canada. “His extraordinary leadership qualities coupled with his technical background in CanoeKayak will be key assets for leading our team towards ambitious performance goals at the 2016 Olympic and Paralymic Games and beyond.”
Logan was the Chief Executive Officer of Sport Nova Scotia for seven years. After taking Sport Nova Scotia to new heights, Logan moved to the position of Assistant Deputy Minister for Nova Scotia Health Promotion. He was instrumental in establishing the organization as a government department dedicated to improving the health outcomes of citizens. Logan worked his way up in government to Acting Deputy Minister of the Nova Scotia Department of Intergovernmental Affairs.
Logan will work closely with Head Coach Scott Oldershaw along with high performance coaches and athletes to continue to build on a tradition of success.
Canadian paddlers have won a total of 24 Olympic medals since 1936 and CanoeKayak remains one of Canada’s top performing sports. Paracanoe events will make their debut at the 2016 Paralympic Games.
“Returning to my roots is an incredibly exciting opportunity,” commented Logan. “Paddling has always been in my life, regardless of what I may have been doing professionally at any given time. To rejoin what is one of Canada’s top Olympic sports is an honour and a responsibility I take seriously, and the opportunity to work in an area I’m passionate about is something that doesn’t come along very often.”
Logan is the author of numerous technical publications. He has developed several assessment innovations including “Fitdex testing” which has been a long standing winter training ritual for many paddlers. Logan was recognized for excellence in coaching with one of CanoeKayak Canada’s most prestigious honours, the R. Edgar Gilbert Award.
Logan will begin his new role as High Performance Director on March 4. He will work from Halifax with an office at the Canadian Sport Centre Atlantic. He will travel to training centres to work with coaches, athletes and other staff as needed.
