Golden moments at the Nanjing Youth Olympic Games
Michael Noyelle | ICF Press Release - Belarus triumphed in the C1 and K1 head-to-head canoe-kayak sprint in bad weather on the southern side of the Xuanwu Lake in Nanjing on Sunday.
Kamila BOBR (BLR) won the country’s first gold medal in the women’s C1 having led the competition from the preliminaries. The Belarussian was the first to compete after a torrential downpour and won her final in 2:21.640.
More than five seconds behind her was Lludmyia LUZAN (UKR), who won the silver medal. Victoria MORALES CAZAREZ (MEX) was third.
The Mexican was elated about her silver medal but said the conditions were very tough. “It was very difficult because the waves are really horrible. The wind was horrible too.”
BOBR compatriot, Stanislau DAINEKA (BLR) won the gold medal in the in the men’s K1 in 1:36.913, less than a half a second behind Milan MOZGI (HUN) who won the silver.
MOZGI said, “I feel great. I’m a little bit tired after the race. Basically, I'm very happy with the result. That’s why I train very hard and now I'm very happy to have won the silver medal.”
Vladislav OLEYNIKIKOV (RUS) took home the bronze.
In the men’s C1, Serghei TARNOVSCHI (MDA) was triumphant in 1:57.688.TARNOVSCHI said he was very surprised he won the gold, “I have been waiting four years for this medal. I have trained in the morning and the evenings, the morning and the evenings.”
He said conditions were very tough on the lake.
“The race was very difficult because the weather was not very good. I have a lot of water in my boat,” he said.
More than four seconds behind the Moldovan was Vadim KOROBOV (LTU) who won the silver and Krystof HAJEK (CZE) won the bronze.
Inna NIKITINA (RUS) won the gold medal In the women’s K1 in 1m 49.922s. Luca HOMONNAI (HUN) was second and Camilla Aldana MORISON REY (ESP) was third.
There will be a rest day and changeover for the canoe-kayakers on Monday. They will resume the competition with the men’s and women’s C1 and K1 obstacle canoe slalom at 0900 on Tuesday.
