Germany overhauls 200m kayaking structure
Guy Dresser | Royal Canoe Club - Germany won three golds, one silver and two bronze medals in London, making it the star turn along with Hungary. But sports chiefs back home were unimpressed by the failure to pick up a single 200m medal and so, according to reports, has overhauled its 200m coaching team.
Arndt Hanisch is the new 200m coach, succeeding Clemens Paarman, who’s the new junior coach. The German Canoe Association (DKV) said it believed the new appointment would ensure the team was on the right track for success in 2016 at Rio.
The restructuring is the first tangible sign that other countries are scrambling to catch up with the early lead in 200m established by Great Britain. Team GB won a gold in K1 (Edward McKeever, pictured) and a bronze in K2 (Liam Heath and Jonathan Schofield).
DKV sports director Jens Kahl said the aim was to get on the 200m podium, starting with the World Championships in Duisburg in 2013.
