German canoe federation (DKV) restructures trainer team

canoe kayak paddlesport dkv restructure coach trainer team germany tomasz konietzko sportscene moscow world championships 2014

Source: kanu.de | Translator: Ulla Fischer - In preparation for the Olympic Games 2016 in Rio and as a consequence of the disappointing results of this year’s world championships in Moscow, the German canoe federation (DKV) rearranges its trainer team.  This, also in regard to the competition for the important quota places in Milan next year.

Of course, the results in Moscow fell short of our expectations, but more of the spots we had in the finals could be transformed into medals. The changes in the trainer team are targeted to closer connect the athletes to the strong and qualifies coaching staff”, canoe federation president Thomas Konietzko said, after a thorough analysis of the trainer team and the supporting staff. The new trainer for the kayak ladies will be Kay Vesely, who was partly responsible for the canoe team, until now. Ralph Welke will take over the whole canoe discipline from now on. Arndt Hanisch, who had been national trainer for the sprint discipline, will train the kayak men in the future and will be supported by an assistant, which has yet to be announced. Rainer Kiessler will remain head coach of the A-national team.

But according to the German canoe federation, the situation concerning the canoe offspring is by far more serious than the results of the past world championship. Following disappointing results of the canoe juniors, the trainer team for this category was extended by one staff member. The position will be covered by Detlef Hofmann, who has been the national coach for the kayak men up until now. He will now be responsible for improvements in the junior training, the selection process as well as a better fostering and advancement of young talent, in order to bring the German canoe team back to the top of the world ranking.

Sports director Dr. Jens Kahl commented on this topic: “The solving of our canoe offspring problem within the next 5 years will decide whether or not we stay competitive in the future. I could not imagine someone to be more competent for that job than Detlef Hofmann. His approaches in the development of individual young talent proved to be successful during his work for the sport base Karlsruhe. His task is now to apply those techniques, in adapted form, in other regions of Germany.”

The newly restructured trainer team should be the basis for a successful world championship in Milan 2015, were the necessary quota places for Rio need to be obtained. The reorganised junior trainer team should tackle the detected problems concerning the canoe offspring and lead young canoe talents back to the top of the world ranking in high numbers.
