Lawrence upstages Fox to win K1 National title
Written by: Tom Collings | Photo: Dean Tonkin - Rosalyn Lawrence has produced a sizzling run in the women’s K1 final to upstage London Olympic silver medalist Jessica Fox at the Australian Slalom Championships in Tasmania today.
Lawrence dominated the final, producing a time of 86.75 to finish 2.34 seconds ahead of Fox.
Noemie Fox also produced a clean run to finish third in 92.12, 0.24 seconds ahead of TIS paddler Kate Eckhardt.
Lawrence was happy to start 2016 with a win.
“I had a really solid run and it all went to plan so I am pretty happy with that,” Lawrence said.
The result proves that Lawrence is a strong contender to rival Fox for the K1 women’s berth in Rio and today’s result will give her confidence heading into the selection trials next month.
“It is nice to know that I can keep the nerves under control and do what I can do but there is a lot of hard work to come between now and selection, and it is going to come down to the day to see what happens,” Lawrence said.
The fight for selection will begin at the Australian Open from 5 to 7 February with the Oceania Championships to follow from the 19 to 21 February.
