Marthe de Ferrer
Marthe de Ferrer is a British 18-year old flat-water kayaker, and the current World Youth Quadrathlon Champion. After competing as a triathlete and swimmer, Marthe switched to kayaking aged 11 and has never looked back. She was National Champion aged 14, and was competing internationally the following year. However, after contracting Glandular Fever in 2010 she was forced to stop training – a tough and difficult decision.
To fill her time she began coaching younger kids at her club, before her mother suggested she tried a quadrathlon in the summer of 2011. Before long she had made it to the World Championships, which she won – whilst still suffering from Glandular Fever. Marthe continues to coach and train (carefully!) whilst preparing for University next September – where she hopes to be studying English.
In addition to sport, writing is my absolute passion and is an area I wish to pursue. To be able to write about such a diverse sport like canoeing is amazing, and I am so lucky to have this opportunity. I hope that I can offer something new to the paddling community whilst writing for Sportscene.
Marthe’s website is: www.marthe.co.uk and her twitter feed is @MarthedeFerrer
